The Mission College Wellness and Human Performance (WHP) Facility supports the core academic program components of the Physical Education Department, currently located in the college’s existing Main Building. As a part of the campus masterplan implementation, all program spaces will be relocated, as the Main Building is slated for demolition in 2017.

The new WHP facility encompasses four main studio spaces, as well as faculty offices and support spaces in its 13,692 SF footprint. The main program includes: a Fitness Studio, Dance Studio, Weight Training Facility, and a Specialized Equipment Lab (for Adaptive PE). Ample storage spaces support the studio’s equipment needs, and provide flexibility of use. Built-in benches & storage are strategically located with security of students’ belongings in mind. An outdoor fitness area extends program opportunities, for Cross-Fit and other specialized training regiments.

Working in a highly collaborative shared governance process, K2A worked closely with PE instructors, college administration, and the district facilities department to create a solution to the current academic needs, with forethought to potential future adaptations. In addition to regular programming meetings, the team took field trips to existing facilities in the Bay Area for ideas and inspiration to help shape the project.
